Women of Kalporagan, Kuhmitg, and hulanchegan in Balochistan, Iran
Talking about the patterned handmade red potteries in the South-east of
Iran, today there exist only a few active centers producing these artifacts in
the villages of Kalporagan in Saravan, Kuhmitg in Sarbaz, and Hulenchegan in
Qasr Qand. In fact, Balochistan has not only been an interconnecting region
between the two civilizations of India and Sumer, but it also represents a
rich civilization existing in ancient and even prehistoric eras. The proof of
such a rich civilization is the discovery of some patterned pottery dishes
in the archeological excavations as well as the handmade pottery of today
created by the hands of girls and women in Dehvari, Ghambar Zadeh, and
Raeesi tribes. Functional potteries made of the available materials of the
region have a wide range, from Golpi (dish for keeping bread) to Golja (flower
pot) and Bozdush and Suchki (incense burner), to clay camel or horse, and
other clay animals (as toys) bringing smile onto the lips of the children, which are all a part of the identity of this
dynamic land. Here, pottery is the continuation of the lifeline.
